Speed of Editing

In a film each scene could last a few seconds or it could be a few minutes, but it all depends on the pace of the film and moving along the action, the speed of editing will determine the mood of the film, for example the shots could be quick and this builds suspension. or if it is a relaxed scene the shots would last longer.

One film does not have any edits, this film is called "Russian Ark" this was filmed in one take using a steadicam and a digital camera, this required a lot of organization and timing.
Scenes at the start of a film should be long enough for us to understand what is happening within the film and to set out the story.

A fast paced film is "The Bourne Supremacy", this is a fast paced action film with a lot of editing.

continuity editing

Retains a sense of realistic chronology and generates the feeling that time is moving forward, to do this they may use flashbacks or flash forwards but the narrative will be moving in a realistic way, some examples of continuity editing is:

Eye-line match
We see the character looking at something then the next shot we see what they were looking at.

Match-on-action
We see a character doing something in one shot and then in the next we see them carry on the action.

Graphic match
When two shots are joined/linked by something of a similar shape.

180 degree rule
This is a rule that states that two characters or an object that are in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other.
Sometimes this rule is broken, for example in the film "The Shinning" it is done to show that he is going crazy and to confuse the audience.

Shot reverse shot
This is used to show a conversation between 2 or more people.

mise-en-scene

This is a French term meaning 'what is put into the scene or frame'. The elements of mise-en-scene are:

Settings and Props
The settings is the place where the scene happens and props is what the audience would see on the set, some examples of this would be a bike in a car park. In this picture the cars are the props in the car park.

Costume, Hair and Make-Up
This will tell us what is happening like for example if someone is in western clothes it shows us that it is  set in old western times. villains usually wear black or dark clothes.

Lighting and Colour
There are a lot of different ways you can use light, you can give suspense by putting a lot of shadow on their faces.

Positioning of Characters and Objects in the Frame
The positioning of the characters shows the importance of the character, when you have the camera up high it will make them look small which makes them look weak, but if you have the camera up high it will make them look big it makes them look powerful.

Facial Expressions and Body Language
These are important because it shows us what they feel about the situation or another character within the film.

Thriller Recipe

Thrillers are usually fast pacing with frequent action, with heroes that are less experienced or equipt than the villan (the hero is the underdog). Suspense, red herrings and cliffhangers are used a lit in thrillers, this is a vallain driven plot which means he makes the hero's job even harder and by putting obstacles in the hero's way which they must overcome.

The genre is flexible and engage the audience through a dramatic remdering of psychological, social and politic tensions. Thrillers often take place in exotic places, the hero's are usually "hard men" like police man or tey can be normal citizens. The lead hero's are usually men.

Thrillers that have the hero killed I'm the process is usually influenced by film noir or tragedy.

Sub genres are: action thriller, conspiracy thriller, crime thriller, disaster thriller, drama thriller, erotic thriller, legal thriller and medical thriller.
