When Things Turn Ugly Film

Question 7

looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the product?

for my preliminary work i made the film "the dealer", i will be comparing this to my final thriller "the hypnotist", firstly the quality of shot is better in the thriller compared to the preliminary, there is more of a variety of shots and the quality is better with no shakiness of the camera, and the shots are more clearer.

in our final thriller we used different lighting mostly natural outside lighting but for some inside shots we used the lights. this means we get better and clearer lighting which gets us better and clearer quality shots.

also in the final film we used a rode microphone which is a professional microphone and this gave us good quality sound which is better than the microphone we used for the preliminary and in some scenes of  the preliminary the quality was bad and couldn't hear much in some of it.

furthermore our final thriller was better because we had more props and better clothing, we were able to record outside of school so we didn't get to wear any proper clothing that would fit the film.

finally in the final film we were able to use all our knowledge of the shots and where to use them efficiently whereas in our preliminary film we were using them anywhere, our final thriller looks much better because we used our knowledge of all these things and used them in the right places and edit it to make it look good.

i have learned that the technologies from the process of constructing this product, is that you will use a lot of different hardware, software and internet sites to make the film.
the hardware we that we used is a camera to record the footage,

tripod to keep the camera at a good steady angle,

microphone to record the sound in higher quality than what the camera can,

lights to get better lighting and give dramatic effect to the scene.

final cut express, i learned how to edit my film in this, for example cut footage and make separate sub-clips and change volumes and insert transitions and music.

photoshop, in this i made the ident for our film, and i learned how to make images in Photoshop and insert text over it.

blogger, i learned to use blogger to help me document the process of researching, planning, constructing and editing my opening of a thriller. i had not blogged before so this was all new to me. i learned quickly how to use the label system to organise my work and set it out into clear categories. i also learned how to embed HTML codes for things like videos and power points. and i also learned how to embed images.

dafont, i learned that using by dafont i can make my work look more processional and look better, and dafont gives me a wider range of fonts than the basic fonts that are already installed.

freesfx, this is a website where i found free un copyrighted music and i found out how to download and insert music into my films.

youtube, i learned how to upload and get feedback fro my films.

my thriller holds the audiences attention because it is interesting on how the character "the hypnotist" and how we don't know him and what he is trying to do and why he is trying to do it.

our audience would want to watch our film to see what would happen to Rupert and the Dr, and whether Rupert would get in trouble for his crime or whether the Dr would for abusing his power and getting rupert into trouble and see why the Dr wanted to kill the Female character.

The audience feedback we got was alright, mostly good but some said that improvements on sound and editing could have been made, overall the feedback we got was good.

Question 1- in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In our film we have used many different conventions of the thriller genre is:
Powerful Villains- the Dr is a powerful character in the film and has alot of power and resources and uses it for evil.

a film that is like this is "North by North West" where the bad guys have more power and better resources and facilities and equipment.

Frequent Action/Fast Paced- how it fades in and out from the talking scenes to the murder scenes.

Underdog- Rupert is the underdog and is being made to do things he doesn't want to because the Dr is abusing his power.

Sexuality Stereotyping (Sexism)- The two main characters are male and they are the stronger characters out of the three shown in our short intro. the female is shown as being weak and getting attacked and as a target for the men to kill. but also one male character, Rupert is shown as weak minded because he is hypnotised and then is under the Dr's command and does anything he wants him to do.

another film this is the Birds when the female character seems weak and scared and relies on the male character a lot in the film.

Finding Music

For our thriller we were looking for a variety of music that was building tension, to find this we went on the website jewelbeats. We needed music for our ident,  so we chose a light catchy jingle for this so it would stick in peoples head and they will remember it is ours. We chose "monster attack".

Title: The Hypnotist Synopsis:Dr J. Smith specialises in hypnotism and provides treatment for patients who have previously suffered trauma. Rupert Jones is one of his patients who attends a session after suffering from increasingly violent and obsessive visions of an unknown girl. In attempt to unravel his issues the doctor heavily influences his patient to confront the issue by finding this girl. Rupert, who remains disorientated, is offered hypnotism and without consent, a strange injection to follow. Rupert’s visions repeatedly reveal him carrying a torn photograph of his victim which matches the complete photograph on his doctor’s desk. The complete copy shows that Dr. J. Smith is in the previously missing half of the photograph. Is the hypnotist really who he appears to be?Key Genre Conventions:
“Fast-paced and frequent action”:
The frequent visions of Rupert’s to create a non-linear narrative that jumps from the visions back to the session in the doctor’s office.
“Resourceful heroes who must thwart the actions of more powerful and better equipped villains”
The remainder of the film would follow up on more individual cases of the “serial killings” that have been occurring. The audience will discover that the doctor is behind each and every murder that will result in his victims (the patients) fighting back for justice. 
“Ordinary citizens accidentally drawn to danger”
Each of Dr. J. Smith’s patients are ordinary and helpless who believe they are in safe hands however by chance, by being advised to choose his services, they fall victim to become murderers through mental influence.
“Primary mood: ‘fearful excitement’”
“There is one thing that I get to offer you, and that is hypnotherapy” is the line that will commence the following action. This intends to leave the viewer anticipating what is to follow while feeling slightly on edge as a result of previous shots.

“The conflict between the main characters is mental and emotional as
opposed to physical”
We are attempting to lean more to the ‘psychological’ thriller genre. “Mental” conflict is displayed
through the patient’s visions and the influential hypnotherapy of the doctor. Although one incident of
“physical” conflict occurs during the film’s opening (the injection), it’s purpose is to affect Rupert
mentally to cause him to continue having visions until he carries out the murder.
“Characters who switch sides or who cannot be trusted”
This applies to the doctor’s character and at the same time, his patient, Rupert. Although it isn’t made explicit, there are hints that alert the audience that Dr. J. Smith is not genuine and may be the cause of Rupert’s aggressive visions. Equally so, Rupert’s character is split; while he is victimised we cannot trust him entirely because his visions suggest that he is capable of murder.
“The use of a staircase as a motif for impending danger or suspense”
The Hitchcockian convention of a staircase is used at the beginning to create suspense as the character’s identity is not given away.  


Thriller devices:

Cliffhangers: increase audience's anticipation and are used throughout with Rupert’s visions. They are often cut short to retain information and to add to the disorientated feel to the opening that is used to reflect Rupert’s state of mind.
Red herrings: misleads or distracts the audience from the central issue. In one or two shots there will be more than one person in the shot, particularly in the early visions. This will be included to distract and confuse the audience from the central character.
